Brad digs deep for gay marriage

Deep-pocketed superstar Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 (£54,975) to the campaign to protect same-sex marriage in California. Voters will decide in November whether to approve Proposition 8 – an amendment that would ban gay marriage in the state.

In a statement, Brad declared his opposition to the proposition, on the grounds that “everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America".

The actor, currently starring in US box office No.1 Burn After Reading, has been a long-term supporter of gay marriage. He has previously announced that he and Angelina Jolie would not be tying the knot until same-sex marriage was legal across the whole of the US. Yeah, that old excuse…

Brangelina recently appeared in a list of the most generous celebrities compiled by the Giving Back Fund, a charity that encourages generosity among high-profile sport stars and entertainers.

While Oprah Winfrey topped the list with donations in excess of $50m (£27.5m) during 2007, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation came a creditable sixth. The couple donated $8.4m (£4.6m) to various causes, including reconstruction work in New Orleans and the Daniel Pearl Foundation. Angelina played the widow of Pearl, a journalist who was murdered in Pakistan, in the film A Mighty Heart.

Earlier this week, the couple contributed $2m (£1.1m) to efforts to fight HIV/Aids and tuberculosis in Ethiopia, the birthplace of their adopted daughter Zahara.
